General Information
Aeroflex Universal Motor Driver
The Aeroflex Universal Motor Driver provides
a general-purpose flexible interface between the
customer’s system and any Aeroflex motor.
The UMD receives commands from the host system
in the form of serial digital, e.g. RS-232, analog
voltage, or discrete levels. The sophisticated
Digital Signal
Processor (DSP) chip in the UMD is programmed
to implement the customer’s algorithm for
controlling the motor. This may be a simple algorithm,
e.g. constant speed or constant torque. Or the
algorithm may be more complex, such as a PID Controller
for a positioning system, in which the customer
provides the successive position commands, and
the DSP closes the loop.
Output waveshapes are synthesized using high-efficiency
Pulse Width Modulation (PWM). In most cases, the
winding inductance of the motor is sufficient
to filter the high-frequency (typically 100kHz)
PWM components and provide smooth, high-efficiency
operation.
